Serius is an expert in whipping; his beauty is a riding crop, but he's an expert with all manner of whips, floggers and paddles. He's also a man looking for someone special to be his sub; he believes in order, discipline, submission, but he also wants a challenge. When Hercules promises him the perfect sub in exchange for his working at the exclusive Velvet Glove, Serius believes it's possible he just might find the man he's looking for.
Dragonne has the appearance of the perfect sub, but the truth is he's never truly submitted. He's never been pushed past his boundaries, never had to use his safeword, never been broken. He has built a wall of control around his core, and wonders if anyone can breach it. Can these two men find what they're looking for in each other?

PROS:
- I find it interesting to read about characters with such different life philosophies than mine. (see cons below also)
- Each story I read from the Velvet Glove world makes the setting seem more complex and more fantastic. The club is entirely self-contained, and it runs perfectly smoothly, from the cleaning to the food service to the play areas to the security.
- Dragonne's teacher plays a significant secondary role in this story, and I enjoyed the scenes that expand upon him and his partner. Their story is in the very first Velvet Glove paperback, and it's so short that they come across as mostly flat. It was fun to see Katashi and Gloucester again, particularly since they're settled into their relationship in this volume.
CONS:
- As intriguing as I found the characters, I had trouble connecting with them. Their thoughts and actions were a bit too mystical for me.
- Serius is not one of my favorite dominant characters. He's pushy and rude, and he doesn't temper those qualities with much tenderness. Dragonne even takes to muting his emotions: "He was careful not to show his pleasure, his anticipation. So far, any of that had not been well taken."
- Dragonne moves into Serius's quarters after only about ten minutes of acquaintance. I realize that the fantasy is that Hercules and Mal are never wrong in their matchmaking, but the immediate moving-in-together irritated me.
- All I have to say about the editing here is...sigh.
Overall comments: I'm an unabashed fan of the Velvet Glove series, so if I discover that I've missed one, I snatch it up immediately, regardless of story or length or characters. Because this story is a part of the series, I liked it okay. If it had been the first Velvet Glove story I read, though, I doubt I would have been impressed enough to keep reading.
